Top Skincare Tips for the Perfect Youthful Glow

Wash your face correctly!
You should wash your face, neck, and décolletage in the morning and in the evening with warm water. It should not be hot or cold. In order to wash your face correctly you need to use a gentle but thorough cleanser, such as Ascend Daily Cleanser. I believe that it’s best to also use a soft silicone glove to remove make up and dirt more effectively without over scrubbing. Rinse your face 10 times making sure to remove all cleanser. Do not rinse with cold water to close your pores as you will be using other products after washing your face and want to make sure that they absorb properly . Pat your skin dry with a clean soft towel.
Remember to always use soft and clean towels and silicone gloves on your face so as not to spread bacteria.

Give yourself a massage!
When washing your face, gently move your hands in circles in an upward and outward motion. You do this because it helps remove inflammation and stimulates the lymphatic system.

Seize the Day!
The second step in most skin care routine is serum. After your morning face washing you will want to use either a serum or a daily moisturizer, such as our Ascend Vitamin B Serum or Ascend Daily Moisturizer. Which one you use depends on your skin type. If you have normal to dry skin use our Ascend Daily Moisturizer. If you have oily skin use our Ascend Vitamin B Serum. This serum is also moisturizing so you do not need moisturizer over it during the day.

Always use a good noncomedogenic sun screen.

Have  A Night Routine!
Step two varies for people with different skin types.
For people who have dry skin or who have fine lines or wrinkles. In this step you will use your intensive serums such as Ascend Anti Gravity Serum. Ascend Anti Gravity Serum should be put on any areas of your face that are dry or where you have fine lines or wrinkles. This can be used around your eyes and mouth

For people under 25 years old with normal skin apply Ascend Vitamin D Serum. You should then apply a high quality daily moisturizer over your serum, such as our Ascend Daily Moisturizer both in the morning and at night.

Use Retinol!
Step three, for people with acne, fine lines, sun damage or wrinkles you will use a high quality retinol, such as Ascend Intensive Retinol Night Cream. See the notes on retinol in #8 below.

Choose Serum
The next step is using a a high quality whole face serum. I recommend Ascend Vitamin B Serum. Younger people who do not have sun damage or wrinkles can omit this step.

Seal your skin
Finally, add a moisturizer to both moisturize and seal the nutrients into skin, such as Ascend Daily Moisturizer.

Deal with Sensitivity
Many people have a sensitivity to retinol. The number one rule is not to use retinol on wet or damp skin because the may absorb too deeply or spread into unwanted areas. Do not use retinol in the eye socket area or on lips.

Although retinol may work quickly on some people it can up to 12 weeks to see improvement and the most improved will be seen after 6 to 12 months.

It is normal to feel a little stinging and have varying amounts of peeling. It’s essential to give your skin a chance to adjust to retinol. Gradually increase how often you are using based on how your skin responds. It’s best to start slowly then add retinol more often over time, until you can use it daily or every other day. To apply, use a pea-sized amount and dab onto five points—the forehead, nose,  cheeks, and chin. Gently, in an outward and upward motion, rub it in to evenly distribute it over the face. Use a second pea-sized amount for the neck and décolletage.

Here are some tricks to starting a retinol regimen.
If you feel that you have more than a normal amount of stinging you can alter the regimen so that it’s comfortable for you.
You may want to start using retinol every third day and working up.
If that causes sensitivity apply Ascend Daily Moisturizer or Ascend Vitamin B Serum before your retinol or, for more protection apply both your serum and moisturizer before your retinol.
If that is still causing sensitivity apply Ascend Vitamin B Serum first then mix your retinol with your moisturizer.
If you are still having sensitivity try using less retinol only once per week, mixed with moisturizer.
If you feel that you are having an allergic reaction please consult your doctor and discontinue use.

It usually takes two days for the cells to regenerate to the surface and cause the skin to get flaky, gentle exfoliation on the 3rd day is recommended for removing the surface dead cells that appear. A mild scrub or planing tool is effective. When using a facial planing tool make sure that you never use a tool that does not have a safety blade. Using a regular blade, razor or scalpel  can be very dangerous and cause severe injury.
Be aware that your retinol may work more quickly and seem stronger after exfoliation because it can now penetrate deeper into the skin.

Understand Retinol
Excerpts of quotes from dermatologists Mikhail, Nazarian and Roseau!

Retinol reduces signs of aging: Because retinol enhances skin cell turnover, you’ll notice a more youthful quality to your skin.

Improves the texture of your skin: By boosting collagen production, your skin will have more turgidly, structure, and strength. Plus, the cells on the surface of your skin will be replaced more quickly, helping smooth your skin and reduce the dull, dry look of dead skin.

Evens skin tone: Retinol can not only smooth the texture of your skin but the tone as well. “With continued use, retinol works to fade hyperpigmentation (brown spots and patches) and give the look of smoother skin in a gentler, non-drying way than a prescription form,” explains Rouleau.

Clears acne: Retinol decreases the function of overactive oil glands and unclogs pores. Mikhail says this clears skin, makes pores look smaller, and prevents breakouts. Plus, it boosts the potency of active ingredients in other acne-fighting medications, so if you use it in conjunction with other cleansers, you may see amplified results.

Boosts collagen production: This helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity. “At the same time, it prevents the loss of the collagen and elastin we already have by slowing the enzyme that breaks them down,” says Mikhail.

Reverses the effects of sun damage: The antioxidants in retinol can help repair sun-damaged skin, such as lightening dark spots.

Side Effects of Retinol

“The side effects of retinol are that it can cause dryness, peeling, and irritation,” says Mikhail, who adds that women who are pregnant, planning, or breastfeeding should not use retinol. “Retinoids can only be damaging to skin if you have a super-sensitive underlying skin condition like eczema or rosacea and can flare and enhance inflammation,” says Nazarian. “Still, patients with sensitive conditions like rosacea may still be able to use a retinoid, but they need to gradually introduce it into their skincare regimen, perhaps only one time weekly, and prep their skin with a topical moisturizer before applying the retinoid."

“It can make your skin more sensitive to other products, procedures, and sunlight,” notes Mikhail. “Don't use harsh scrubs, astringents, toners, alpha hydroxy acids, and beta hydroxy acids at the same as your retinol [because the] combinations can dry out and irritate your skin.”

Mikhail says that you’ll need to stop applying retinol for at least a week before things like getting a facial, laser treatment, chemical peel, waxing, or intense sun exposure because it increases your sensitivity. And, if you must go in the sun, there are some important sun-exposure precautions. “If you would like to use a retinoid in the summertime, it’s imperative that you wear a high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen daily,” suggests Nazarian. “Along with sunscreen, because your risk for burning is so high, I would avoid peak hours of sun and wear a broad-brim hat when outdoors.”
